Known as the origin of Ubud, the historical temple
From 1.5 km west of Ubud market, Gunung Lebah Temple locates at Campuan, above a fork of Cerik River and Wos River. The scale of temple is small, however, it has long history relates to the origin of Ubud.
The temple was established by a Javanese priest in 8 century. When the monk Resi Markandya from Jawa passed this place, he found the beautiful valley where the fork of two rivers, and he established this temple. The monk Resi Markandya and his followers stayed in the place and made a village. They also found the great grove of the medicine plants, and named the place as “Ubad=medicine plants.” The pronunciation was changed over the time, it becomes “Ubud” now.
